This basket is a sturdy double-layered decorative basket constructed with hard reed fiber and intricate weaving techniques. The red and black geometric design is woven, and leather is used around the rim of the basket and across the middle band. It has a hard base made of fiber. These African baskets are traditionally used to hold gifts which are presented to a bride and groom during wedding ceremonies. Woven from very strong water grasses, these baskets are lightweight but sturdy. It is likely from the Mossi people of Burkina Faso, but cannot confirm.
Measures 9.5 x 8.5" at the base and 10.5" high, 17" x 20” diameter at the opening. It has an irregular shape at opening, some snagging of the reeds, and the leather is dry and aged. This basket is old and beautiful.
